Nordland (Pty) Ltd was established in 1967 as an importer of light fittings from Europe. Over the years it became apparent that our future lay in local manufacture and a process of import substitution began. Now Nordland (Pty) Ltd manufactures locally a range of fluorescent Zone 1 fittings, the NLE Series, and a pendant range the PNL Series

In Zone 2, we manufacture a Highbay, the NHC and also a fluorescent range in stainless steel the NSP and also the JBP Range in a flame retardant dough moulding compound. (DMC).

Care has been taken with the design of the various light fitting ranges to ensure that they are sufficiently robust to meet the requirements of the mining and other industries in Africa, and yet be internationally acceptable.

The JB Range of lighting is for normal corrosion and waterproof installations while a modification to body strength allows for its use in areas where a dust ignition proof or hose proof luminaire is required.

Nordland (Pty) Ltd can claim to be the only manufacturer of this type of luminaire in South Africa and is very proud of this achievement. All other locally supplied similar products are imported and replacement spares are subject to the financial strength of the local importer and their previous history in this field and whether that particular product range remains available in Europe.

Following the establishment of Nordland Australia their requirements too are being integrated into the product range and the Maxi and Mini Floods have just been released.

In terms of the Government Notice R1792 in the Government Gazette No 17548 of the 8th November 1996 it became a legal requirement that from the 8th November 1998 all luminaires offered for sale or that are sold comply with the requirements of SABS 1464. The onus of requesting proof of compliance rests with the purchaser. For non permit holder samples must be submitted for approval and a letter of compliance obtained.

Working closely with the South African Bureau of Standards all light fittings comply with and are approved as complying with their specifications. Nordland (Pty) Ltd is a permit mark holder for their range of hazardous luminaires, while the non-hazardous comply with the requirements of the Safety Specifications, SABS 1464, again Nordland (Pty) Ltd is a permit holder.

The quality of the products is such that Standards Australia has granted approval for the Zone 1 NLE and Zone 2 JBP Range with the JB Range having non-hazardous approval.

A company’s strength lies in its staff and not being a large company where individuals are numbers we are proud that some of the original staff are still with the company since its inception in 1967.
